July 24, 2019: Measles

 

Patsy Stinchfield updates us on the recent measles outbreaks across our nation.  She will discuss the public health response required in a measles emergency and the complexities involved when those impacted are relative newcomers to community. Lessons learned will be shared from the Minnesota Measles 1990 outbreak that impacted the Hmong community and the 2017 Measles outbreak that struck Somali pre-school children.

Patricia (Patsy) Stinchfield, MS, CPNP, CIC is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in Infectious Disease who specializes in vaccine preventable diseases. She is the Senior Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Children’s Minnesota. She is a widely recognized infectious diseases specialist, having served as the first Nurse voting member of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices where she continues as a liaison member today. She is currently serving as the Vice President for the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases Board of Directors. During her 30 years at Children’s she has led teams in response to outbreaks such as measles and H1N1 in diverse communities. Patsy led the Hospital Incident Command efforts at Children’s during the 2017 measles outbreak which was the largest in 30 years.
