Nick Brown, Washington State’s 19th Attorney General, is a graduate of Morehouse College and Harvard Law School. Nick began his legal career in the Army JAG Corps, where he received the Bronze Star for his work defending the rights and liberties of young soldiers.
After Nick completed his JAG tenure, Nick returned to Washington to initially work as a prosecutor, and then as lead counsel to Governor Jay Inslee. After leaving the governor’s office in 2017, he worked in private practice with one of the premier law firms in the region. In 2021, Nick was appointed as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington and also served on the Attorney General’s Advisory Subcommittee on Civil Rights.
Nick was elected as the Washington Attorney General in November 2024. As Attorney General, he is committed to getting results that benefit Washington residents and tangibly improve their lives.
Maureen Johnston joined the Washington State Attorney General’s Office in 2025 as the First Assistant Attorney General. She is a member of the Attorney General’s core leadership team and works on matters to protect the interests of Washingtonians. Prior to that, she served as a deputy chief in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. She supervised and participated in numerous pattern-or-practice investigations and enforcement matters involving law enforcement agencies, including the Baltimore Police Department, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the Memphis Police Department, and the Phoenix Police Department, among others. She also contributed to the Division’s efforts to enforce the Americans with Disabilities Act through investigations into cities’ emergency response systems and litigation to enforce the integration mandate of Olmstead v. L.C. She began her legal career at the Justice Department through the Attorney General’s Honors Program and is a proud graduate of the University of Washington School of Law. She was born and raised right here in Bellingham.
